Sacre du Temps
“There are so many different levels on which we could approach and sense the notion of time. My intention with this project is to touch upon two of them: the “time schedule” that we are part of and the parallel time that we experience on an emotional level.
The aspect of time the first part of the performance deals with is basically the lack of time. I see it through fragments of individual intentions that are sucked up in the vacuum of time which is constantly speeding up, slowing down, coming to a stop and then rushing to an inevitable end again.
In the second half of the performance these individual intentions interact on a different level, in a parallel time which lies at the bottom of our subconscious. Very often we feel strange impulses coming from unknown places; they might be some kind of holes in time, or memories that never happened, but keep us constantly busy.” Edward Clug.
Choreography buy EDWRRD CLUG (1974 Rumania). From the age of ten until he was eighteen, Edward Clug attended a classical ballet school in Cluj/Napoca in his native Rumania. Shortly afterwards he was hired as a ballet soloist with the Slovenian National Ballet in Maribor. In 1996 he created his first piece; ‘Babylon’. Two years later, he composed the choreography for the closing ceremony of Thessaloniki European City of Culture. In the same year he was awarded the first prize by the Slovenian Ballet Dancers Association for his ballet Tango; the first of a string of prizes Clug would receive in his own country as well as abroad for his excellence both as a dancer and a choreographer. In 2003 he became artistic director of the Slovenian National Ballet in Maribor, a company whose repertoire encompasses the great classics, but also shows great affinity with contemporary movements. He quickly established a small group of excellent dancers within Maribor Danse, for which he has been creating contemporary pieces. His Radio & Juliet received universal acclaim during a European tour which also travelled to the Netherlands. Clug made his debut at Station Zuid during the Open Dagen in the southern provinces of Noord-Brabant, Zeeland and Limburg, with Requiem for Two Chairs, a moving solo to Mozart’s well-known Requiem, set in a boxing ring.
On Virtual Orchestras
The International success of Borut Krzisnik’s series of seven recordings, produced in his studio in Slovenia, was achieved using state for the art sampled sounds by real musicians playing their instruments under ideal conditions together with those of live performing musicians, the result of which gives rise to great freedom of expression, especially in the hands of this masterful composer.
Borut’s deeply intuitive musicality is based on his knowledge of conventional orchestral scoring when combined with pure digital sampling technology and has given us the opportunity to share in his wonderfully imaginative and creative world, which magically amalgamates the DNA of the Slavic idiom into a wonderfully pictorial and futurist composition. I belive we are so fortunate to be associated in the dawning of this truly talented composer’s music.
Borut Krzisnik (1961, Zagreb) is a Slovenian composer of contemporary music, based in Ljubljana. Born into a family of diplomats, he moved frequently during his childhood, both within former Yugoslavia and abroad, before finally settling in Ljubljana. Living among different nationalities and experiencing different mentalities helped form his understanding of diversity, something which certainly contributed to his broad approach to music. He played piano as a child, eventually switching to guitar and building up his unique way of composing. He graduated in Psychology from the University of Ljubljana, but devoted himself to music.
Claudio have released eight of his albums to date and he has written music for numerous feature films, dance performances and theatre productions. In his music, Krzisnik creates meeting point for avant-garde and popular music, or else, ‘academic’ and ‘underground’ music. His compositions are characterised by their boldness, intensity, contrasts and unique sound. The symphony orchestra is transformed by computer technology into a “super-real” orchestra, challenging and discovering new territories in symphonic music. Using a polyglot musical language, he draws a common thread through all the contrasts and introduces them to us with inspiring optimism. He has collaborated with Peter Greenaway, Gerald Thomas, Edward Clug, Julie-Anne Robinson and band Laibach, to name but a few.
“The most thrilling thing is discovering and rediscovering the shapes and structures of chaos.”
