Track 2:

The Ukrainian Alphabet

А, Бе, Ве, Ге, Ґе, Де, Е, Є, Же, Зе,

И, І, Ї, Йот, Ка, Ел, Ем, Ен, О, Пе,

Ер, Ес, Те, У, Еф, Ха, Це, Че, Ша, Ща, Ь, Ю, Я.

There is a soft sign (Ь) “м’який знак”

which makes the previous consonant letter sound soft

For example

Т – ть, н – нь, с – сь, л- ль.

Track 3:

Now, let’s learn how to pronounce vowels

In the Ukrainian language there are 6 hard vowels

А     –   as in the word “Park”

Е     –   as in the word “Pan”

И     – as in the word “Big”

І       –   as in the word “Keep”

О     –   as in the word “Clock”

У     –   as in the word ” Book”

And there are 4 soft vowels

Є   –   as in the word “Yes”

Ї   –   as in the word “Yeast”

Ю –   as in the word “Youth”

Я   –   as in the word ” Young”

Track 4:

In the Ukrainian language there are

words consisting of just one letter

Let’s learn them!

Я     –   means “I”

Є     –   means ” Is”, “am” or “are”

Now let’s say

I am   –     Я є

I am a musician   –     Я є музикант

I am an engineer –     Я є інженер

To say the prepositions “in, to, at, into” use “В” or ” У”

For example

 I am in the supermarket – Я є в супермаркеті

I am in a restaurant – Я є в ресторані

The conjunction “and” – “і”

For example

 Badminton and tennis – Бадмінтон і теніс

Football and basketball – Футбол і баскетбол

Lemon and banana – Лимон і банан

Next, let’s practise pronouncing some syllables

Б-a – ба, х-а – ха, ч-а – ча, ф-а – фа; ж-о – жо,

й-о – йо, щ-о -що; ц-е – це, д-е – де, п-е – пе

з-у – зу, р-у – ру, с-у – су, л-у – лу; м-и – ми,

т-и – ти, в-и – ви; к-і – кі, н-і – ні; л-я – ля

Now let’s learn words consisting of just two letters

Each word will be repeated twice

This – Це

What? – Що?

Where? – Де?

How? – Як?

No – Ні

You – “ти”

This is the informal form used between friends,

family members or when addressing younger people

You – “ви”

this is the plural form and is also used when speaking formally

In the Ukrainian language you can say

What is this? – Що це є?

or simply

Що це?

Where is this? – Де це є?

or simply

Де це?

Where am I? – Де я є?

or simply

Де я?

Where are you? (informal) – Де ти є?

or simply

Де ти?

Where are you?

(formal)

Де ви є?

or simply

Де ви?

Now we can learn some three- letter words

Each word will be repeated twice

Yes – Так

Who? – Хто?

Son – Син

Tea – Чай

Juice – Сік

Cheese – Сир

Soup – Суп

Cat – Кіт

Nouns in the Ukrainian language have a

Masculine, Feminine or Neuter form

In the Masculine form, the Personal Pronoun

“He” is “Він”

The Possessive Pronoun

“My” is “Мій”

Now let’s say

Who is this? – Хто це?

It’s him – Це він

Who is this? – Хто це?

This is my son – Це мій син

Also note that while referring to animals

we use the animated form of

“Who” – “Хто”, or “He” – “Він”

which is the same as used when referring to humans

Who is this? – Хто це?

This is the cat – Це кіт

He is my cat – Він є мій кіт

What is this? – Що це?

This is cheese – Це сир

What is this? – Що це?

This is juice – Це сік

What is this? – Що це?

This is tea – Це чай

This is my tea – Це мій чай

Is this tea? – Це є чай?

No, this is juice – Ні, це є сік

The Nouns we have covered so far have been

Masculine Nouns

These words have no vowel endings

The endings sound hard

Listen to the following words

Now let’s learn some Nouns in the Feminine form

which have the endings “-a” or “-я”

Each word will be repeated twice

Mother – Мама

Daughter – Дочка

Sister – Сестра

Girl – Дівчина

Book – Книжка

School – Школа

Water – Вода

Coffee – Кава

The Personal Pronoun

“She” is “Вона”

The Possessive Pronoun

“My” is “Моя”

Now let’s say

Who is this? – Хто це?

This is my mother – Це моя мама

Who is this? – Хто це?

This is my sister – Це моя сестра

Who is this? – Хто це?

This is a girl – Це дівчина

Who is she? – Хто вона?

She is my daughter – Вона моя дочка

What is this? – Що це?

This is water – Це вода

What is this? – Що це?

This is coffee – Це кава

What is this? – Що це?

This is my school – Це моя школа

Is this a book? – Це книжка?

Now let’s learn some Nouns in the Neuter form,

which have the endings “-о” or “-е”

Each word will be repeated twice

Town – Місто

Underground station – Метро

Field – Поле

The Sea – Море

Chair – Крісло

Bed – Ліжко

Milk – Молоко

Butter – Масло

The Personal Pronoun “it” is “Воно”

The Possessive Pronoun “My” is “Моє”

Now let’s say

What is this? – Що це?

This is a field – Це поле

What is this? – Що це?

This is the sea – Це море

What is this? – Що це?

This is my town – Це моє місто

What is this? – Що це?

This is the underground – Це метро

What is this? – Що це?

This is a chair – Це крісло

What is this? – Що це?

This is my bed – Це моє ліжко

What is this? – Що це?

This is butter – Це масло

Is this milk? – Це молоко?

Yes, this is milk – Так, це молоко

And now let’s learn the words

“Here” and “There”

Here – Тут

There – Там

I am here – Я є тут

You are here – Ти є тут

He is there – Він є там

She is there – Вона є там

Who is there? – Хто там?

It’s me – Це я

What is here? – Що тут є?

Here is my telephone – Тут є мій телефон

What is here? – Що тут є?

Неre is water and tea – Тут є вода і чай

What is there? – Що там є?

There is my bed. – Там є моє ліжко

What is there? – Що там?

There is my book – Там є моя книжка

Where is the computer? – Де є комп’ютер?

The computer is there – Комп’ютер є там

Where is the soup? – Де є cуп?

The soup is here – Суп є тут

Where is the coffee? – Де є kава?

The coffee is there – Кава є там

Here are some Greeting words

Each phrase will be repeated twice

Hello! (formal)

Добрий день!

(This literally means – Good day!)

Hi! (informal)

Привіт!

Welcome! – Ласкаво просимо!

Please – Прошу

Thank you! – Дякую!

Thank you very much! – Дуже дякую!

How are you? (informal)

Як ти?

How are you? (formal)

Як ви?

How are things? – Як справи?

Good, well or fine – Добре

Very good – Дуже добре

Goodbye (formal)

До побачення!

Bye- bye – Па-па

Good, now let’s learn the Numbers from one to ten

Each number will be repeated twice

One – Один

Two – Два

Three – Три

Four – Чотири

Five – П’ять

Six – Шість

Seven – Сім

Eight – Вісім

Nine – Дев’ять

Ten – Десять

Track 14:

These are the Days of the week

Each day will be repeated twice

Monday – Понеділок

Tuesday – Вівторок

Wednesday – Середа

Thursday – Четвер

Friday – П’ятниця

Saturday – Субота

Sunday – Неділя

Track 15:

We will now study the Prepositions

“On” and “In”

On – На

On the chair – На кріслі

On the bed – На ліжку

In – ” В” or “У”

In the town – У місті

In London – В Лондоні

In New York – У Нью-Йорку

In the park – У парку

Listen to the following words

В місті, на кріслі, в Лондоні

at the end of these words you can hear the vowel – “і”

and in the words

в ліжку, у парку, у Нью-Йорку

you can hear, that it ends in the letter “у”

Now let’s learn some Verbs or doing words in their infinitive form

Each Verb will be repeated twice

To do – Робити

To live – Жити

То read – Читати

To write – Писати

To work – Працювати

To understand – Розуміти

With the Personal Pronoun “I” the verb endings become “-у” or “-ю”

Now let’s say

I live – Я живу

I read – Я читаю

I write – Я пишу

I work – Я працюю

I understand – Я розумію

Track 17:

Next, let us learn how to use Verbs in the

informal and formal forms using “you”

Let us practise these phrases using

“you” in the informal form.

Here the verbs have the ending “-еш” or “-єш”

Each will be repeated twice

You live – Ти живеш

You read – Ти читаєш

You write – Ти пишеш

You work – Ти працюєш

You understand – Ти розумієш

Now let’s practise these phrases using

“you” in the formal form

Here the Verb endings are “-ете” or “-єте”

You live – Ви живете

You read – Ви читаєте

You write – Ви пишете

You work – Ви працюєте

You understand – Ви розумієте

When asking a question, we use the same words

but only change the intonation so that it

sounds higher towards the end of the sentence

For instance

Are you reading? (informal)

Ти читаєш?

Yes, I am reading – Так, я читаю

Are you reading? (formal)

Ви читаєте?

Yes, I am reading – Так, я читаю

Are you writing? (informal)

Ти пишеш?

Yes, I am writing – Так, я пишу

Are you writing? (formal)

Ви пишете?

Yes, I am writing – Так, я пишу

Are you working? (informal)

Ти працюєш?

Yes, I am working – Так, я працюю

Are you working? (formal)

Ви працюєте?

Yes, I am working – Так, я працюю

Do you understand? (informal)

To give a negative answer, like “No”

then you use “Ні” and “Не”

Are you reading? (informal)

Ти читаєш?

No, I am not reading

Ні, я не читаю

Are you reading? (formal)

Ви читаєте?

No, I am not reading – Ні, я не читаю

Are you writing? (informal)

Ти пишеш?

No, I am not writing – Ні, я не пишу

Are you writing? (formal)

Ви пишете?

Are you working? (informal)

Ти працюєш?

No, I am not working – Ні, я не працюю

Are you working? (formal)

Ви працюєте?

I am reading – Ні, я не працюю, я читаю

No, I don’t understand – Ні, я не розумію

Here are two other frequently used questions

What are you doing? and Where do you live?

What are you doing? (informal)

Що ти робиш?

I am writing – Я пишу

What are you doing? (formal)

Що ви робите?

I am working – Я працюю

What are you doing? (informal)

I am reading – Я читаю

Where do you live? (informal)

Де ти живеш?

I live in Kyiv – Я живу в Києві

Kyiv is the capital of Ukraine – Київ – столиця України

Where do you live? (formal)

Де ви живете?

I live in Kharkiv – Я живу в Харкові

Where do you live? (informal)

Де ти живеш?

I live in Ternopil’ – Я живу в Тернополі

Where do you live? (formal)

Де ви живете?

I live in Zaporizhzhia – Я живу в Запоріжжі

Let us learn some more vocabulary

Each word will be repeated twice

Day – День

Year – Рік

Brother – Брат

Room – Кімната

Flat – Квартира

Table – Стіл

Sofa – Диван

Bread – Хліб

Cake – Торт

 

Track 21:

In order to describe these Nouns,

let us now learn some Adjectives (descriptive words)

They will be repeated twice

New – Новий

Big – Великий

Good or kind – Добрий

Beautiful – Гарний

Tasty – Смачний

As they describe the subject they come before the Noun

and their endings are in agreement depending on whether they are

Masculine, Feminine or Neuter.

In the Masculine form, the adjectives have the ending -“ий”

Hello! – Добрий день!

New Year! – Новий рік!

New computer – Новий комп’ютер

New sofa – Новий диван

Beautiful day – Гарний день

Kind brother – Добрий брат

Tasty soup – Смачний суп

Tasty cake – Смачний торт

For Feminine Nouns, the endings become “-а”

For example

Tasty coffee – Смачна кава

Large school – Велика школа

Large room – Велика кімната

New flat – Нова квартира

New book – Нова книжка

Kind sister – Добра сестра

Beautiful girl – Гарна дівчина

And when using the Adjective before a Neuter Noun

the ending is – “- е”

Big field – Велике поле

Large sea – Велике море

Beautiful town – Гарне місто

Tasty milk – Смачне молоко

Tasty butter – Смачне масло

New chair – Нове крісло

Track 22:

Now we will learn how to say,

“I like” and ” I do not like” in Ukrainian

I like – Мені подобається

For example

I like reading – Мені подобається читати

I like the sea – Мені подобається море

I do not like – Мені не подобається

For example

I do not like writing – Мені не подобається писати

Also note, that the word “this” – “це” changes

whether in Masculine, Feminine or Neuter form

In the Masculine form “this” becomes “Цей”

I like this tea – Мені подобається цей чай

I do not like this sofa – Мені не подобається цей диван

I like this table – Мені подобається цей стіл

For the Feminine form “this” becomes “Ця”

I do not like this book – Мені не подобається ця книжка

I like this flat – Мені подобається ця квартира

I like this room – Мені подобається ця кімната

And in the Neuter form “this”- “Це” remains as “Це”

I do not like this chair – Мені не подобається це крісло

I like this town – Мені подобається це місто

I like this field – Мені подобається це поле

Now listen to this short story

Hi! Привіт! I live in Lviv. Я живу у Львові.

Lviv is a big and very beautiful city.

Львів велике і дуже гарне місто.

I live in a flat. Я живу у квартирі.

This is my room. Це моя кімната.

Here is the table, chair, sofa,

television and computer.

Тут є стіл, крісло, диван, телевізор і комп’ ютер.

There is juice, water, bread, butter,

cheese, coffee and cake on the table.

На столі є сік, вода, хліб, масло, сир, кава і торт.
